THE FOREST

Exotic, unique, famous… Strofilia Forest is located in the National Wetland Park of Kotychi-Strofilia and covers an area of 22,000 acres; it’s about 14 kilometers long and has an average width of 1250 meters. The alternation between dense vegetation and open glades and between wetland habitats and drier terrain, as well as the many species of wildlife that it hosts, make up a living ecosystem of maximum ecological importance and unsurpassed aesthetic value. The forest borders Kotychi Lagoon, Prokopos Lagoon, the Lamia Marsh and the Ionian Sea.
Strofilia Forest is the largest stone pine forest in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Apart from the dominant stone pine, the forest is composed of large areas of Aleppo pine, and there are oaks and wild cedars as well. The variety of landscapes is surprising, as the forest abuts the sea; here, the vast green of the woodland meets the endless blue of the Ionian.
